Robert was educated at Colston’s School in Bristol and worked in the construction and road haulage industries before entering Parliament. He lives in the heart of the constituency in Parkstone.
He has campaigned on many local issues. His first major debate in the Commons was on the need for a new Poole bridge, which was finally built in 2012, opening up great opportunities for Poole. Since the last General Election, Robert has served as chairman of the Regulatory Reform Commons select committee, a job he left to join the Government as an Assistant Whip, dealing with Home Office issues and those of energy and climate change. Leaving the Government in 2013, he was elected chairman of the HS2 select committee dealing with petitioners on the railway route.
Robert has one of the highest voting records in the Commons and has held regular surgeries and meetings in Poole to assist his constituents. He was re-elected in May 2015 with 23,745 votes, which was 50.1% of the votes cast and gave him a majority of 15,789 over the next candidate.
