12/10/2006 - 2/3RDS OF SUB POST OFFICES LOSING MONEY AND IN DANGER OF CLOSING

Conservative MP for Poole and Shadow Local Government Minister Robert Syms has expressed alarm at the news that over two thirds of sub post Offices are losing money and in danger of possible closure.

The grim prediction has been made by Postcomm, the independent regulator for postal services in its annual report to Government which is published today, entitled “Post Offices at the crossroads”.   Poole has already lost 7 local post offices between 1999 & 2005, with up to another 10 predicted as being in danger.

The Annual Report claims that the Government policy of the withdrawal and  switching of services like Benefits and Pensions from ‘over the counter’ to direct Bank Account credits has cost Post Offices approximately £168 million in lost transactions over the past year alone.

Robert Syms MP said, “Post Offices are the lifeblood of Poole’s communities, but their future is now under real threat. Since 1999, Poole has lost 7 branches, with many more in real risk of closing as they are not making enough money to cover running costs.  The Government speaks of supporting rural services, however the annual subsidy of £150 million paid to support the rural network is due to finish 2008, it is about time the Government give a clear direction of their future plans.  Ministers need to take into account the wider social role played by Post Offices.”

Roberts Syms said “I would like to see an increase in the number of services available from urban and rural post offices and so increase their long-term viability.  Currently Post Offices are prevented from offering the services of companies that compete with the Royal Mail.”
