Cllr Dr Brian Leverett, Leader of Poole Council When the Conservatives regained control of Poole Council in May 2003, we inherited a situation where Council Tax had risen by 12% and 14% in the previous two years and in addition to these exorbitant increases, budgets were being overspent, resulting in dangerously low Council Reserves.
Many residents complained of declining services and poor standards of street cleanliness. I regularly received complaints in the summer regarding weeds growing in pavements, choked gutters, graffiti and fly posting. The Guildhall, Upton House and Fourways all needed very large sums of money spent on them.
We immediately began addressing the issues. We introduced monthly public monitoring of budgets. We started to reverse the years of neglect. We made the appearance of our Borough a priority by increasing the frequency of street cleaning and addressing fly posting, graffiti and other areas of neglect, which had spoilt the town. Most of all we reduced the size of annual Council Tax rises to 3.5 - 5%.
We are not complacent. Much still remains to be done. We have to carry on increasing the provision of affordable housing; turn the dream of a second harbour crossing into a reality; standardise the age of transfer of school children across the borough and further improve the delivery of all services. Together your Conservative Team will continue to deliver the services you and the town deserve, at a price you can afford.
Yours faithfully
Cllr Dr Brian Leverett Leader of the Council
